Quick answer: Bengaluru-based Quanfluence has raised $10 million in a round led by Chiratae Ventures, with Rainmatter by Zerodha and existing investor Pi Ventures also participating. The money will go towards building a full-stack photonic quantum computer that combines its own chips, control electronics and software.

What Is Quanfluence?

Quanfluence is a deep-tech company that builds quantum computers using light (photons) instead of electricity. It was founded in 2021 and incubated at IIT Madras. Its team includes founders who earlier built and sold a semiconductor IP company to Synopsys.

Before this round, the company had already commercialised a photonic Ising machine, which is a device designed to solve hard optimisation problems, along with other quantum devices. Its earlier systems were aimed at problems such as financial risk management, logistics, workforce scheduling and delivery routing.

What Is Photonic Quantum Computing? (Simple Explanation)

Normal computers use bits that are either 0 or 1. Quantum computers use qubits, which can hold a mix of states and help solve certain problems much faster.

Different companies build qubits in different ways. Some use superconducting circuits that must be cooled to extremely low temperatures. Photonic quantum computers use particles of light on tiny optical chips. Supporters say this approach can be more energy-efficient and easier to connect with existing chip-making technology.

Quanfluence is working on a continuous-variable photonic design, which is one of several approaches to building photonic quantum machines.

What Will Quanfluence Do With the $10 Million?

The company says the funds will be used to build its full-stack system. “Full-stack” means it controls all three layers:

  1. Photonic chips, designed in India
  2. Control electronics that run the chips
  3. Software that lets users program the machine

Since its last round, the company has built several core technologies needed for this architecture, including photonic integrated circuits, quantum light generation and light-matter interaction chips.

Quanfluence Roadmap: 4 Qubits to 100 Qubits

  • Near term: develop and launch a four-qubit quantum computer.
  • By 2027: early processors, according to one report.
  • By 2029: a larger prototype of about 100 qubits.

Four qubits is a small machine, and going to 100 is a big engineering jump. Timelines in quantum hardware often slip, so this roadmap should be seen as a target and not a promise.

Why This Funding Round Matters

1. Large for an early-stage Indian deep-tech deal. A $10 million round is on the higher side for hardware startups in India at this stage, and it shows that investors are willing to back capital-intensive quantum hardware.

2. A fivefold step up from the seed round. The 2024 seed round was $2 million. The new round is five times larger.

3. Strong investor mix. Chiratae Ventures is an established deep-tech and growth investor. Rainmatter, backed by Zerodha, has been active in funding Indian startups with long-term potential.

4. Fits India’s national quantum push. The government’s National Quantum Mission, approved with an outlay of about ₹6,000 crore, aims to build domestic capability in quantum computing, communication and sensing.

Risks and Challenges

  • The technology is unproven. Photonic quantum computing is still early. Competitors around the world are also working on photonic and other approaches.
  • Scaling is hard. Going from 4 to 100 qubits needs breakthroughs in chip design, error control and manufacturing.
  • Capital needs are high. $10 million is meaningful in India, but global quantum companies have raised much larger amounts, so more funding rounds are likely.
  • Commercial use is years away. Large, error-corrected quantum computers are still a long-term goal.

Can Retail Investors Invest in Quanfluence?

No. Quanfluence is a private company, so its shares are not listed on the NSE or BSE and cannot be bought through a normal demat account. Retail investors can follow the story through funding news, and may get exposure to the theme later through listed companies or funds, subject to their own research.

What This Means for the Indian Startup Ecosystem

Funding for deep-tech and quantum startups shows that Indian investors are moving beyond consumer apps and software into hardware and fundamental technology. If Quanfluence delivers on its roadmap, it could help India build quantum capability at home instead of depending only on imports.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much did Quanfluence raise?
$10 million.

Who led the round?
Chiratae Ventures. Rainmatter by Zerodha and Pi Ventures also participated.

What is Quanfluence building?
A full-stack photonic quantum computer combining chips, control electronics and software.

When will the quantum computer be ready?
The company plans a four-qubit machine in the near term and a roughly 100-qubit prototype by 2029.

Where is Quanfluence based?
Bengaluru, India. It was incubated at IIT Madras.

How much did Quanfluence raise earlier?
$2 million in a seed round in 2024, led by Pi Ventures.

Can I buy Quanfluence shares?
No, it is an unlisted private company.

Final Thoughts

Quanfluence’s $10 million raise is a positive sign for India’s quantum ecosystem, and its plan to own the whole technology stack is ambitious. The real test will be whether it can deliver working qubits on schedule. Watch for the four-qubit launch as the first major milestone.
