QNu Labs Raises ₹200 Cr to Scale Quantum Cybersecurity R&D

Every encryption system protecting your bank transactions, government records, and private messages today relies on a mathematical assumption: that certain problems are too hard for computers to solve quickly. Quantum computers, once powerful enough, are expected to break that assumption entirely — turning decades of “secure” encrypted data into something that could be decoded in hours. A Bengaluru-based startup has spent nine years building the defence against exactly that future, and investors just backed it with one of the largest funding rounds India’s quantum-tech sector has seen.

The Deal

QNu Labs has raised ₹200 crore (approximately $21 million) in a Series A1 funding round, co-led by the government-backed National Quantum Mission (NQM) and deep-tech investor Speciale Invest. The round also saw participation from Sony Innovation Fund, Gaja Capital, and Artha Ventures, among others. This takes QNu Labs’ total capital raised to date to ₹375 crore.

The company’s funding history shows a steady build-up of institutional confidence: a $6.5 million pre-Series A1 round led by well-known investor Ashish Kacholia in December 2023, followed by a ₹60 crore Series A round led by the National Quantum Mission in April 2025, and now this ₹200 crore Series A1 round — roughly tripling the company’s earlier round size within about a year and a half.

What QNu Labs Actually Builds

Founded in 2016 by Sunil Gupta and Srinivasa Rao Aluri, and incubated at IIT Madras, QNu Labs describes itself as the first Indian company to build quantum cybersecurity products using Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) technology. In plain terms: QKD is a method of exchanging encryption keys between two parties using the physical properties of quantum particles, in a way that makes any interception attempt detectable — because observing or measuring a quantum state inevitably disturbs it. That’s a fundamentally different security guarantee than traditional encryption, which relies on a mathematical problem simply being hard to crack, not physically impossible to intercept without detection.

The company’s core platform, QShield, is built as a security-as-a-service offering combining several quantum-resilient components: quantum key distribution, quantum random number generation (QRNG), and post-quantum cryptography (PQC) — the last of these being encryption methods specifically designed to resist attacks from future quantum computers, even when implemented on today’s ordinary hardware. With this raise, the company is also scaling QShield 2.0, a newer platform focused on helping enterprises discover and assess their existing cryptographic assets — essentially, an inventory and risk-assessment tool for organizations that don’t yet know how exposed their current encryption really is as quantum computing matures.

Beyond enterprise cybersecurity, QNu Labs is also developing security solutions for drones and satellites, with drone security technology already in pilot deployments — an area the company’s leadership has pointed to as having strong potential in the defence sector specifically.

Why This Round Matters: The Government Funding Angle

One detail makes this raise more than a typical VC round: QNu Labs was previously awarded a ₹150 crore project under the Indian government’s Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Fund, tied to building technology infrastructure for India’s Quantum Secure and Sensing Networks (IQSN). Government RDI funding of this kind typically comes with a matching-investment requirement — meaning the recipient company has to raise a comparable amount of private capital to unlock the full government funding. This ₹200 crore Series A1 round helps QNu Labs meet exactly that requirement, which is a meaningful structural reason this round is sized the way it is, beyond ordinary growth-stage fundraising logic.

The Bigger Picture: India’s Quantum-Safe Push

This funding round lands squarely inside a broader national push. India has set a target of transitioning toward quantum-safe technologies by 2029, driven by the National Quantum Mission — a central government initiative under the Department of Science and Technology that has now backed QNu Labs across two separate funding rounds. The urgency behind this timeline comes from a security concept researchers call “harvest now, decrypt later”: adversaries can intercept and store encrypted data today, with the expectation that sufficiently powerful quantum computers will be able to decrypt it retroactively within the next decade. For sectors like defence, banking, and critical infrastructure, that risk window makes quantum-safe migration a present-day concern rather than a distant, theoretical one.

QNu Labs already has a presence in Australia and the US alongside other international partnerships, and plans to use the fresh capital to expand its go-to-market operations both domestically and abroad, while continuing to build out its quantum sensing and AI-adjacent technology stack.

Why Investors Are Backing This Category

QNu Labs isn’t operating in isolation globally — companies like Australia’s QuintessenceLabs have raised similar rounds for comparable quantum-safe cybersecurity technology, signalling that investors across multiple markets see this as an emerging, defensible category rather than a speculative bet on distant science. What makes India’s version of this story distinct is the direct involvement of a national government mission as a repeat investor — a signal that quantum-safe infrastructure is increasingly being treated as a matter of strategic, sovereign technology capability, not just a commercial cybersecurity product line competing for enterprise budgets.

For a country racing to secure its expanding digital infrastructure — from banking systems to defence communications — betting early on indigenous quantum-safe capability is as much a national-security calculation as it is a startup-funding story.

This article is based on QNu Labs’ official funding announcement and reporting from Inc42, Entrackr, The Quantum Insider, and ViEstories. Funding figures, investor details, and company plans are as disclosed by the company and its investors at the time of the announcement and may be updated or revised going forward.
